We understand that a fireplace with an innate beauty and presence does not just enhance a room but defines it.

Gatwood and Elcombe is a family run business that has evolved from 28 years of experience working exclusively with fireplaces. The early years were spent rescuing and renovating original pieces which has given us an invaluable insight and understanding of their design and construction. The marble and stone mantelpieces are produced in our own workshops in Hertfordshire using only solid, natural materials. This also empowers us with a priceless and unrivalled advantage of being able to react promptly to meet the specific requirements of our customers. The choices include Italian Carrara and Sivec marble, creamy or semi regio limestone or Verde Dolomite. Moreover, each of our materials has its own distinctive characteristic colour variation with the markings inherent of any natural stone or marble. Whilst our mantelpieces are offered in standard sizes they can also be made to measure; bespoke commissions are also undertaken.

The majority of our fireplaces tend to be Georgian, Victorian or Edwardian, reflecting the respective style and specific hallmarks of the period. There is however an interest in contemporary style and we have duly developed several designs that embrace the discerning modernistas. Within the Oliver mantel for instance, we have absorbed the detail from a piece dating from 1780 - incorporated it with a simple frame and shelf – and thereby aligned it with the sleeker and more linear demands of modern design. The result being a fresh interpretation of the simple classically inspired form prevalent in Regency Britain. Alternatively the Stonehenge – aptly named by a member of the family - was first developed by us some 15 years ago and is still being installed in period houses and flats as well as contemporary apartments. In essence we provide a unique tailored service – from the finest stonemasons to bespoke design – which is unrivalled throughout the UK.
